Meet GLP with OAKTON pH benchtop meters

All pH meters are not created equal—an important consideration when purchasing instrumentation used to meet Good Laboratory Practices. GLP requires that time and date be recorded with the parameter reading (see Figures 1 and 2), so that in addition to the specific ranges and accuracies of the instrument, data storage and transfer capabilities are critical.

There are many data storage options available, depending upon brand, model, and price range. Some pH meters store data when prompted. Others store it automatically within specified intervals. Still others store it continuously. The same holds true for data transfer. Some pH meters will transfer data to a secondary device as readings are taken. Others with internal memory will collect it over time and store it for later processing.

Which options should you choose? The most economical alternative is to purchase a pH meter with recorder outputs. These meters generate a continuous signal which can be fed to a chart recorder. However, to meet GLP they require a separate, concurrent time and date recorder, increasing the cost to the system.

For optimal functionality, choose a unit with an RS-232 interface. This interface allows raw data to be transferred to your computer for analysis or for use in spreadsheet applications. Meters with this interface can easily transfer the date and time, fulfilling the GLP requirements.
